a carton contains soup cans weighing a total of 20 pounds. Each can weighs 1-1/4. How many cans does the carton contain?

This is a division problem.

20 divided by 1 1/4

20/(1 1/4) = 20/(5/4) = 20/1 * 4/5 = 80/5 = 16

There are 16 cans.
